SMAAAK News for December

SMAAAK was established in 2013 to raise funds for the restoration and improvement of our beautiful Our Parish Church. Since its inception, SMAAK has raised close to over £35,000, which has been spent on various improvement. Peter King, Chair of the Kingsland Church Fabric Committee and SMAAAK Trustee, now looks ahead to the next stage of this exciting project.

“Kingsland’s 12th Century Church of St.Michael & All Angels, is a Grade 1 Listed building, and situated at the very heart of our lovely village. As such it takes a great deal of time and money to keep this magnificent building open not just for Church services, but also many other gatherings such as h.Art, Remi Harris, Pop Up  Opera.

Some years ago the Church started a major program of works, in particular the re-roofing. Time never stands still, and once again the Church needs to undertake further major works if we are to bequeath this superb building to future generations. The north aisle now needs re-roofing, the medieval stained glass windows are in very poor condition, the interior requires a complete redecoration, a disabled toilet and kitchen needed, and heating and lighting updates also required, amongst many other detailed improvements.

The estimated cost will be in the region of £400,000 to £450,000 and the Church Council has decided to begin the complicated process of applying for a Heritage Lottery grant. If we are successful, we will need to raise a proportion of the funds ourselves, typically around 10%. Apart from our own congregation, the Church receives no financial help at all other than the non-religious charity, SMAAAK. SMAAAK raises funds for the fabric of the Church and has been a wonderful help in very difficult times. We would ask everyone to support their activities in the knowledge that not only are you helping the Church building survive, but having a very amusing and happy time whilst doing it!

We do hope that the village will help support us in this ambitious program, whether Church goers or not, so that this remarkable building can continue to play a vital part in Kingsland’s daily life”.
